8 healthy plant ingredients & 40 grams of protein

Frozen Bananas - adding 3 grams of protein in ripened bananas not only bring a creamy, sweet flavor but make this smoothie nice and thick! The highly bioavailable potassium, B12-enhancing gut friend, and phytochemicals help you get through the day. If using fresh bananas versus frozen fruit, be sure to throw in some ice cubes to thicken the creamy texture.

Chia Seeds & Hemp Seeds (aka hemp hearts)- are packed with healthy fats. These Omega-3 fatty acids decrease cholesterol and promote cardiovascular health. Seeds are also a great way to get optimal calcium and magnesium, the perfect addition for muscle repair with a nutty flavor. Adding chia and hemp seeds to this recipe will result in 6.5 grams protein and 5.5 grams fiber!

Maple syrup - a natural sweetness and my go-to for added flavor; add whatever sweetener you fancy. Optionally throw in 1-2 Medjool dates.

Vanilla Extract - vanilla adds a warming, sweet flavor that enhances the flavors of peanut butter and protein powder.

PB powder -  adding 8 grams of protein, this powder has 87% less fat than regular peanut butter while providing a deliciously tasty flavor. You can omit this ingredient and use nut butter, but the concentrated peanut flavor shines in powder form.

Tahini or any nut butter - 100% natural sesame seeds and 6 grams of protein; this butter is my favorite. You can use any nut butter or seed butter you prefer (almond butter, cashew butter, or sunflower seeds butter).

Vegan Pea Protein Powder - with a whopping 22 grams of clean plant protein, my go-to protein powder in chocolate flavor pulls this drink together. Below I'll share why this protein powder meets my standards with all clean ingredients!

Salt (optional) - enhances the chocolate flavor and, when using natural salt, brings in minerals needed after a sweaty workout.

Sources of protein powder

Planet Protein is packed with nutritious ingredients, transparency, and a relatable mission for all plant and animal lovers. As a qualitatian (high-quality whole food ingredients), having clean protein powder seemed nearly impossible, and therefore I threw protein powder in a not necessary bucket.

I know that high protein consumption is not nearly as important as we are made to believe. Based on personal research, my opinion is that high protein diets can harm our hard-working organs. Many protein powders sitting on shelves across America are littered with toxic heavy metals and harmful ingredients to our nervous system from our workout culture. So when picking the right product for this Vegan High Protein Smoothie, I did my research!

Some resources

After restarting my exercise journey a year ago, I decided to up my protein consumption for my muscle goals. Some resources I used were:

Websites - the company's website will tell you a lot if you know what to look for. When it comes to protein powders, there should be transparency with a Chemical Certificate of Analysis and super bonus points if it's easy to find, but emailing the company and requesting this information is recommended. There's likely a reason if there isn't transparency, and that's an easy no for me.

Find people who share the same mission with food - the Heal Thy Self Podcast is one of the places I go for reviews and health information. Dr. Christian Gonzalez N.D. has been unveiling tons of helpful information on how to live a healthy life. The protein powder episode is linked below.

Planet Protein

Sustainably sourced ingredients: coconuts, cacao, pea, reishi, stevia, chia, quinoa, and Himalayan salt all make up the 22 grams of protein in each serving. Their Chemical Certificate of Analysis (lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury) is front and center on their homepage, with extra information on how to read and understand the results. This powder hits all the correct boxes over the past five months and helped me gain muscle mass by adding it to my post-workout smoothie.

How to make: vegan protein smoothies

Easy peasy! Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until combined and smooth. Add more plant milk if needed to reach desired consistency. For this recipe, either oat, almond, or coconut milk will do.

Tip: Pour smoothie into a glass and top with cacao nibs for extraness!
